Botched carjacking teen flees Qld court

A teenage boy charged over an attempted carjacking is on the run after he switched places with another boy who was being released from a Gold Coast court.

The boy and a 15-year-old girl allegedly pulled a knife on a 24-year-old woman and demanded her car after she offered them a lift from Harbour Town shopping centre on Thursday night.

The panicked driver drove away and hit the 15-year-old girl, who is fighting for life in hospital.

Police say the boy, who was arrested on Friday, was in a cell at the Southport Court on Saturday morning to face a charge of unlawfully entering a vehicle, while threatening violence when he was "inadvertently released".

"Two boys were in a cell at the Southport Watchhouse, one due for release, the other to be remanded in custody," Queensland police said in a statement.

"When police called out the name of the boy to be released, the other boy stepped forward and was mistakenly let to leave."

Officers chased the boy, however he has not been located and the public is being urged to help find him.
