Smart TV talks in Australian accent

The latest in television technology has been released by Samsung - a TV that talks to you.

But don't worry about not understanding it, the TV speaks with an Aussie accent!

Samsung Electronics Australia today announced the launch of its next-generation ultra-large, UHD TV, the 85-inch Samsung S9 in the F8000 series.

Simply tell the television what you wish to watch, and it selects the appropriate program. The television can also learn what you like to watch and will give you suggestions using Samsung's S-Recommendation.

In an Australian first, the tech giant worked with linguists at Macquarie University in Sydney to perfect the Aussie accent.

"We're especially proud to be launching this year and unique to Australia, is the Natural Language functionality," Samsung's Vice President of Consumer Electronics, Philip Newton, said.

"Specifically designed for the Australian market, whereby the TV understands the way we speak and can speak back with an Aussie accent, can make recommendations based on analysing viewing habits and truly illustrates the level of innovation that Samsung is able to deliver to Australian consumers."

As with any voice-controlled technology, performance may vary depending on the language spoken, local dialect, pronunciation, voice and surrounding environment, including ambient noise.

The television itself comes in four sizes in the F8000 range, include 55, 60, 65 and 75 inches, with varying in price points.

It has an ultra-thin profile, and offers a vibrant and richest colours with the highest contrasts - the brightest picture quality of any Samsung LED TV to-date.

This is also among the first of Samsung TVs to offer support for the new high-compression video codec, called HEVC, a codec that allows double the compression rate of previous codecs resulting in much higher video quality, while streaming over lower bandwidth, so your content will consistently look stunning.

The additional processing power allows more improvements in imaging quality. This allows users to switch between online services, apps and on-air TV much faster than the 2012 Samsung models.

"Our 2013 Samsung Smart TV range spans affordable large-screen sets all the way to mind-blowing, high-design luxury TVs," Mr Newto, said.

Mr Newton said the "reinvigorated design philosophy" would enhance the user experience with "innovative, intuitive and interactive technology".

Samsung also offers a Smart Evolution Kit (sold separately), which offers a way for consumers to update their TVs with the latest technologies and features, removing the need to purchase a new TV.

For S9 UHD customers this ensures their product stays up-to-date with future developments standards of ultra-high definition broadcasting for up to five years.

The kit fits into the evolution slot on the back of 2012 Samsung 7500 and 8000 Series LED TVs, as well as Samsung Series 7000 and 8000 Plasma TVs, and updates them with some of the latest features and functions included in the newest Samsung models.

The 2013 F8000 LED and the F8500 Plasma TVs also include a Smart Evolution slot. The 2013 Smart Evolution kit includes a quad-core processor, GPU and memory for faster processing and multi-tasking (compared with a dual core processor), the updated Smart Hub and the latest picture display software.
