A new teaching and leadership academy to be built in central-western Victoria will offer professional training to high-performing teachers.

Victorian Education Minister Natalie Hutchins said the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership will be built on Camp Street in Ballarat, and would be completed later this year.

"The academy will ensure our teachers get the best professional development and building this facility in Ballarat will deliver major benefits to the local economy and support jobs," Ms Hutchins said.

The centre will support up to 500 high-performing teachers from government, Catholic or independent schools to further their professional practice in teaching or leadership.

The site will also house the City of Ballarat's Arts Incubator, which will provide a collaborative and educational space to Victorian artists, offering skills in video, TV and sound production.

New academy locations have been also announced for Bairnsdale, Bendigo, Geelong, Mildura, Moe and Shepparton.
