Teacher marries former student she fell in love with

A teacher who had an affair with a student is now married to him with three children.

Natasha Miller was 23 when she met Hayden Macdonald, then 16, in 2006 while gaining teaching experience at Tararua College, north of Wellington on New Zealand’s north island.

The New Zealand Herald reports she then left the school after confessing to having a sexual relationship with him.

Since Ms Miller wasn’t a teacher during this period, the Teachers' Council did not investigate.

At the time, Mr Macdonald said their relationship was “awesome”.

Four years later, she was found teaching at Dannevirke High School nearby and was engaged to the former pupil, who was employed part-time at the same school.

Their relationship is still intact and both are still employed as teachers. They’re also now married.

Ms Miller works as a Year 9 dean in pastoral at Dannevirke while her husband is a Year 10 dean at Palmerston North Boys' High.

Di Carter, the principal of Ms Miller’s school, told the NZ Herald she was unaware of how the couple’s relationship started.

“It makes no difference to me what happened and I would like to say she is a dean and a very respected colleague of our school and community – we support Natasha,” Mr Carter told the paper.

Mr Macdonald added he and his wife are “very happy” with three children.

"Our relationship has lasted the distance, that's all I want to say,” he said.
