A man has been extradited from Queensland to face charges that he sexually assaulted his teenage student on the NSW north coast 40 years ago.

The 66-year-old teacher is facing numerous charges relating to the sexual assault of a girl when she was 13 to 16, between 1981 and 1983.

Queensland detectives arrested the man at a home in Morayfield on Tuesday and on Wednesday he appeared in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court, where detectives successfully applied for his extradition to NSW.

The man was escorted back to NSW and taken to Lismore Police Station, where he was charged with 11 counts of sexual assault and carnal knowledge of a girl aged older than 10 and less than 17.

He will appear in Lismore Local Court on Thursday.
