Teacher charged after being caught on camera 'slapping student in the face'

A teacher who allegedly slapped a student across the face, causing his head to ricochet into a wall, has been charged with battery.

Video has emerged of the incident from February 25, showing former 'Teacher of the Year' Michael Hosinski following the student down a hallway.

He appears to grab the student by his backpack and push him up against a wall and before hitting him across the face. The teacher then pulls the student away by his bag, who collapses to the ground as a second teacher approaches.

The incident occurred at Jimtown High School in the US state of Indiana.

On March 4, Mr Hosinski was charged with battery.

The student told an officer that Mr Hosinski had asked him to leave the classroom and he then followed him down the school hallway.

When Mr Hosinski struck the student, his head hit the wall behind him, the student said according to the Associated Press.

Following the incident, the student reportedly had a "throbbing" pain in his head, a bloody nose and lip.

The confrontation was due to the student wearing a hooded sweatshirt to school, according to CNN.

The police officer observed the child had an abrasion and a lump on his head, along with an abrasion on his mouth.

A judge found there was probable cause to charge Mr Hosinski with battery, which could carry a sentence of six months to two and a half years in prison.

Mr Hosinski was released on bond following his arrest last Thursday and will appear in court this week.

The Baugo Community Schools board on Monday granted Mr Hosinski’s request for an immediate retirement. The teacher had previously planned to retire at the end of the school year.

According to CNN, Mr Hosinski was named 'Teacher of the Year' in 2020.
