Tas lower house supports gay marriage

Tasmania's Liberal Premier Will Hodgman is among the supporters of a same-sex marriage motion which has passed state parliament's lower house.

The motion, proposed by the Tasmanian Greens, called for in-principle support for marriage equality, and passed with a majority vote late on Wednesday.

Deputy Liberal leader Jeremy Rockliff also voted in favour of the motion, along with Labor leader Bryan Green.

The federal government has proposed a plebiscite be held during the next term of parliament to allow the Australian people to decide on changing the Marriage Act to recognise same-sex unions.
