The federal government will allocate $461 million for a new cross-river bridge north of Hobart in Tuesday's budget.

A replacement for 70-year-old bridge that crosses the River Derwent at Bridgewater was part of a $920 million roads and rail package for Tasmania revealed on Monday.

"The Bridgewater bridge bottleneck has been a problem for decades, and now thanks to a Liberal government in Canberra, and a Liberal government in Tasmania, it will finally be addressed," Senator Richard Colbeck said in a statement.
