Sydney woman charged with Velasquez murder

A woman has become the sixth person to be charged with murder over the death of Vergel Velasquez in Sydney's west.

Maroubra police arrested and charged the 35-year-old Kingsford woman on Tuesday with murdering 42-year-old Velasquez, who died in Westmead Hospital on New Year's Eve.

The woman was refused bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday.

Five men - aged 39, 41, 42, 49 and 50 - have already been charged with murder and are before courts.

After reports of an altercation at a unit block at Girraween, police found Velasquez with severe head injuries in the stairwell on December 30.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition but died the next afternoon.
