Sydney pub's $29 steak sandwich sparks uproar: 'Thinnest I've ever seen'

A Sydneysider has called out a popular pub over the shocking price of a basic meal.

As cost of living pressures continue to bite, one Sydney woman has taken aim at a popular Western Sydney watering hole for charging nearly $30 for a steak sandwich.

A Reddit user attended The Winston over the Easter weekend and was shocked to find the pub's "award winning" steak sanga and chips came at an eye-watering cost.

"Inflation frustration," she posted alongside a picture of the rather skimpy meal. "I present to you the $29 steak sandwich. Am I being a tight-a**e or is this majorly overpriced for a pub in Winston Hills?"

'Shaved meat'

The woman's post has attracted more than 3,000 upvotes and over 700 comments, with other Aussies in overwhelming agreement that the steak sandwich was both too small and overpriced. "That is the thinnest steak I've ever seen," commented one Reddit user. "Yep, more like shaved meat than a steak," the original poster replied.

"Yup, definite rip-off at that price point," concurred someone else. "Usually, steak sandwiches are done with scotch fillet steaks." The customer responded that scotch fillets cost $49 at The Winston, and also noted that the sandwich usually costs $27, but was priced at $29 as part of a special "Easter menu".

'Took the cake'

The customer went on to explain that although the pub had never been cheap, things were now getting ridiculous, as the total bill for her and her husband's meals approached a staggering sum. "It's always been expensive but this took the cake," she wrote. "For a burger, steak sanga and two beers it was almost $100."

"I don't mind paying for good food," she clarified. "I just don't think a piece of wafer thin steak on some Coles white bread is worthy of the $29 price tag."

The Winston has been approached for comment.

Price gouging?

Meanwhile, another Reddit user, having just returned from overseas, highlighted that even though inflation is a problem globally, prices are "insane" in Australia as businesses seem to be raising costs more aggressively than their international counterparts.

"I'm back for 10 days in Sydney after four years in Tokyo," the user wrote. "Inflation has been going crazy. Yes we have inflation as well over there but not to the same level as it is here. Seems a lot of people are raising prices massively and using 'inflation' as an excuse."

"100%," the customer replied. "It's being used as an excuse for price gouging at so many places."
