A man has been accused of sexually abusing young boys in the grounds of a Sydney eastern suburbs church four decades ago.

The allegations involve the sexual and indecent assaults of two boys aged between six and 10, on church grounds at Waverley between 1979 and 1982.

The report was referred to police in July and detectives arrested a 55-year-old man at a Kingsford home on Thursday morning.

He was taken to Waverley Police Station and charged with indecent assault on males (four counts), buggery and attempted buggery.

The man was refused bail and appeared in Waverley Local Court on Thursday.
