Sydney lawyer crash tackles 'shoplifter' sprinting away from cops

A Sydney lawyer has helped police serve up some justice – but not in the way you’d expect.

Mohamad Sakr said his instincts kicked in when he saw police giving chase near Blacktown Local Court.

Incredible footage shows the solicitor going above and beyond the call of duty, running towards an accused shoplifter before crash tackling the man, sending him flying into a pop-up stand.

Police officers can be seen arriving on the scene just moments later and apprehending the man before praising Mr Sakr for his efforts.

“In the circumstances you don’t think about your safety. It’s more the helping and taking into account Australian values, and trying to act on that,” Mr Sakr told Sunrise.

“After they arrested that man, they came up to me and thanked me for my efforts.”

The heroic lawyer said he is fed up with seeing onlookers reaching for their cameras to film things rather than finding a way to help out.

“I’m so sick of just hearing about these crimes on the news,” he added.

“You see bystanders with cameras out, I don’t want to be that type of person, I thought I needed to intervene.

With no formal offers from any NRL teams, Mr Sakr said he will be back in the courtroom on Tuesday.
