Girl, 5, loses two fingertips in horrific Sydney playground accident

A young girl has lost two fingertips at a playground in Sydney's west after her hand became stuck in a piece of play equipment.

Emergency services were called to Strathfield Park on Homebush Rd on Monday just before 1.30pm with reports the five-year-girl had been seriously injured.

The little girl's hand was reportedly stuck in the carousel with NSW Police, Strathfield council workers and NSW Ambulance paramedics desperately trying to free her.

A spokesperson from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said firefighters from Burwood Fire Station were also called to the scene and "assisted a child, badly injured in a playground mishap".

Firefighters located two severed fingertips which were cut off in the horrific accident.

The five-year-old was then taken to The Children's Hospital in Westmead for emergency surgery.

A spokeswoman for Strathfield Council confirmed to media that they're aware of the incident involving the five-year-old girl.

"Staff responded immediately and have fenced off the equipment in Strathfield Park, and similar equipment in other parks," they said in a statement.

An investigation is underway which should determine how the incident occurred.

Series of worrying playground incidents

In August, a similar incident occurred at a playground in Lake Macquarie, NSW.

A four-year-old girl was on a similar-style carousel when her finger got caught.

While she didn't lose her finger entirely, her nail was ripped off and she required emergency surgery at Maitland Hospital.

The incident prompted concerns from other parents who warned against the "dangerous" play equipment.

"Do not use this playground. In under one hour two small children/toddlers have almost had their fingers severed off," one woman wrote in a community Facebook group.
