Sydney firm fined as worker's hand crushed

A Sydney company and its director have been fined after an employee's hand was crushed while she was cleaning machinery.

NSW Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean said Rydalmere firm Zenger Pty Ltd was fined $60,000 and its director Yan Huai Wu $7,500 in court for failing to ensure the health and safety of workers after five fingers on a 51-year-old woman's hand were severed when she placed it inside a pillow-filling machine to clean it after use.

"I'm appalled to hear this poor woman was not provided with appropriate training or information about the risks, or safety measures for using the machine," Mr Kean said, adding that SafeWork NSW will continue to go after those who aren't doing the right thing.
