'Tragic loss': Woman 'fatally stabbed by ex-boyfriend' before his death

A woman has been allegedly stabbed to death by her former partner who also died of stab wounds in Sydney’s northwest.

Emergency crews were called to a home in Bidwill, a suburb in the City of Blacktown, just before 12.45pm (local time) on Saturday where 22-year-old Ruth Mataafa was found outside with multiple stab wounds.

She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition, where she died during emergency surgery, Nine News reported.

Jaciah Fuimaono, also 22, was reportedly Ms Mataafa’s ex boyfriend, and was found inside the home with stab wounds to his chest and died at the scene.

A crime scene has been established, which is continuing to be examined by specialist forensic police.

Detectives have commenced an investigation, but are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

Family inside the Tongariro Terrace home at the time were witnesses to the stabbing, police said.

“Some intervened in what was happening,” Detective Chief Inspector Paul Tickner told reporters.

“There may have been some kind of split in recent times and they were trying to get back together,” Det Insp Tickner said.

Footage from outside the home showed a large area of blood-stained pavement, believed to be where Ms Mataafa was lying when crews arrived.

A woman who knew the people living inside the home told Nine News they were “like a happy family”.

A relative told the network they saw Mr Fuimaono, who was not known to police, on Friday and didn’t notice any “red flags” in his behaviour.

“It's a tragic loss of life. They were only 22 years old – they had their whole life in front of them,” Det Insp Tickner said.

“Both families are tragically suffering because of this.”
