There are major train delays in Sydney with early morning commuter chaos expected to extend into rush hour.

Sydney Trains confirmed on Tuesday morning a work train had derailed at Circular Quay causing disruptions to the T1, T3, T8 and T2 lines.

Sydney Trains has warned of “major delays” and confirmed repair crews were on site in a bid to return services to normal.

By 7.30am, the repairs were completed, however delays were expected to continue as Sydney Trains worked to return the schedule to normal.

Commuters have already taken to social media to express their dismay at the lengthy delays.

Some reported delays of over an hour.

“Very very angry. This is a regular occurrence,” one commuter trapped on a train wrote on Twitter.

The T2 Sydney Trains social account said it “understands this is frustrating” and apologised for the delays.

“A one off is frustrating. This is a pattern of behaviour. Every week there is something ... I need to get to work,” the disgruntled passenger hit back.

“Beyond a joke now,” another quipped.

More to come.
