Swimming in Parramatta River by 2025

After decades of industrial pollution Sydney's Parramatta River will be cleaned up so it's good enough to swim in by 2025, a community group says.

"Cleaning up the river will not only increase biodiversity and improve the livability of the area, it will also generate real economic benefits, including increased property value and business opportunities for the local community," Ryde mayor and Parramatta River Catchment Group chair Jerome Laxale said in a statement on Wednesday.

On the same day, the NSW Environmental Protection Authority announced Sydney Water will pay $200,000 to the PRCG after 370 kilolitres of untreated sewage leaked into the Parramatta River at Rydalmere last June.
