Suspected rebels kill soldier in Papua

Suspected separatist rebels have fatally shot a soldier in Indonesia's restive Papua province, the military says.

Insurgents opened fire at an army outpost in Intan Jaya district, wounding the 22-year-old soldier, military spokesman Colonel Gusti Nyoman Suriastawa said on Monday.

He died of gunshot wounds to his stomach while being taken to a hospital in nearby Timika district, he said.

Papua has been the scene of a low-level separatist insurgency since the 1960s, but deadly clashes between rebels and government security forces have intensified in the past several years.
