Reality contestant kicked off show over 'inappropriate behaviour'

Survivor US was rocked on Monday night after host Jeff Probst announced one of the players had been removed from the game for the first time in the show’s history.

“So I just spoke privately with Dan [Spilo], and I want to update you guys,” Probst told the group. “A decision has been made, and Dan will not be returning to the game. He won’t be coming back to camp. He won’t be on the jury. He’s gone.”

The only information provided by the show was a title card that read: “Dan was removed from the game after a report of another incident, which happened off-camera and did not involve a player."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly that was published Wednesday night, Probst declined to elaborate any further about exactly what got Dan, who is a Hollywood talent agent in his day job, kicked off the show.

The show and Dan have not made any further comment.

The removal comes after controversy earlier in the season from former contestant Kellee Kim who accused Dan of ‘inappropriate touching’ earlier in the season, forcing producers to get involved.

Dan adamantly denied any wrongdoing in a previous episode. This latest incident came just two weeks after Dan was warned by producers about his alleged behaviour.

Following Wednesday’s episode, Kim released a statement on Twitter.

And the fact that Dan was allowed to remain in the competition as long as he did, did not go over well with fans and former contestants alike.

It seems likely the decision will set a precedent for change in the reality TV landscape.

The news comes after Aussie show House Rules was found responsible for the psychological suffering of a contestant who was negatively portrayed on the show and forced to pay compensation.

The case was a landmark one for Aussie television as formerly networks were not considered the ‘employers’ of reality contestants and therefore not responsible for any injury sustained during filming.
