Surrogate dies while giving birth to family's baby

A surrogate has died after suffering complications while giving birth to a family’s baby.

Michelle Reaves, a mum of two from San Diego in the US, was on her second surrogacy for a family when tragedy struck, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help raise costs for her family.

Ms Reaves gave birth last week however as she was delivering the baby “one complication led to the next and she fought for her life”, friend of the family Jaime Herwehe wrote.

“Although the baby made it out safe, Michelle did not,” Ms Herwehe wrote.

It’s not clear exactly what the complication was that led to her death but Ms Reaves leaves behind her husband Chris and their two children Gage and Monroe.

“For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Michelle, she will always be known for the love she had for her family. Michelle has the best, most sarcastic, funny personality and always had you laughing,” Ms Herwehe wrote.

News of her death, and the circumstances surrounding it, have led to an outpouring of grief.

Kim Schule, a former colleague of Ms Reaves, wrote on Facebook she “can’t believe this is real”.

“Already missing her beauty, wit, and being able to witness the love for her family through what she’d share,” she wrote.

She added Ms Reaves was a “beautiful person and mother”.
