The surprising reason this officer pulled a woman over

A police officer’s tweet about pulling over a driver who was holding up the fast lane is being widely shared online.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, an officer in the Versailles District in southeast Indiana, shared a post explaining he stopped a car which was going too slowly in the left lane on the I-65.

“The driver had approximately 20 cars slowed behind her because she would not move back to the right lane,” Sgt Wheeles tweeted.

According to the Indianapolis Star, there is a state law, where a driver is usually required to move out of the left-most lane if there is another vehicle approaching it. It carries a maximum fine of $500.

“Again… if there are vehicles behind you, you must move to the right lane to allow them to pass,” Sgt Wheeles tweet continued.

There are a few exceptions to the “slowpoke” law, however, generally speaking the left lane is meant to be used for passing and even drivers who are going the speed limit are expected to move to the right for drivers who want to pass, the Indianapolis Star reports.

The officer is being widely praised and motorists in other states are pleading for him to transfer.

“Definitely need you in Louisiana! I see so many near accidents from this everyday. My blood pressure would appreciate the help,” one person wrote.

“How about we share him… AZ gets him during the winter and LA gets him during the summer?? I’m not greedy,” another person tweeted.

However, a number of motorists argued it was still the drivers going faster who are more dangerous.

“The problem is the people driving too fast, not the people driving too slow,” one person wrote.

The officer’s tweet has received close to 71,000 likes and been retweeted more than 23,000 times.
