Surprise! One of this year’s Lifetime Christmas movies features an actual sex scene

Still shot from 'A Cowboy Christmas Romance'

Holiday movie fans know that when it comes to Hallmark and Lifetime, you’re lucky to get more than a brief peck on the lips between lead love interests. And while there’s nothing wrong with keeping things pretty PG, it seems Lifetime is upping the ante this year. One of the network’s 2023 Christmas movies will have a — gasp! — sex scene, and you can bet we’ll be decking the halls, indeed.

As part of 12 new movies featured in this season’s “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” lineup, a little ditty called A Cowboy Christmas Romance will include a literal romp in the hay, as star Jenna Kramer recently admitted on an episode of her “Whine Down” podcast.

Kramer, who co-stars with actor Adam Senn, teased the sexy scene in conversation with the film’s writer, Sarah Drew. “Spoiler alert — he lays me down on some hay, and then we, you know,” she said. “Obviously, it’s still Lifetime, it’s still family. But it was pushing limits there, too… They didn’t cut anything. I was so happy that they really left it all in there.”

“It all came out so beautifully, but especially the scene in the kitchen,” added Drew, who is best known for her role of Dr. April Kepner on Grey’s Anatomy. “I had written into the stage directions, ‘He pulls her up onto the counter, he shoves things off the table.’ I put it all in there, so I was like, ‘Don’t take the steam and the sex away from me. I wrote it on purpose, I want it in there.’”

Tia Maggini, SVP of scripted content at Lifetime, confirmed the spicy news, telling Variety: “We think that there’s an audience out there that’s hungry for grown-up romance, and we’re looking forward to adding some smolder to the usual holiday sugar and spice. We love trying new things, and we’re excited about this new ‘first’ for us for a holiday movie.” Of course, true heads know that Lifetime has always been a little more edgy than its sister network, but a holiday movie hoedown is definitely a first.

Oh, and if you’re curious about the plot of A Cowboy Christmas Romance (whoops!), Variety notes that Kramer plays a real estate agent who “returns home to Arizona to reclaim land belonging to a rancher,” but they end up falling for each other, because… of course. Even if the plot feels a little questionable, it certainly sounds like it’ll be a jolly good time. It premieres just around the corner on Dec. 9.
