Surge in illegal border crossings from Belarus, Poland says

Polish authorities have dealt with record-breaking 173 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border on March 11-12, Poland’s Border Guard Service reported on March 13.

The number of attempts on March 12 alone reached 133, the highest since the beginning of 2024, including 109 in the Dubicze-Czerkovno cheackpointarea.

"Most of the migrants returned to Belarus after seeing the Polish border services [personnel],” the report said.

“Meanwhile, in the area of responsibility of the Białowieża border guard outpost, foreigners attempted to cross the Przewloka River."

Forty attempts were recorded on March 11. On the same day, Polish border guards detained a Ukrainian citizen who came to pick up illegal migrants in the town of Hajnówka.

In total, there were 1,142 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border in the area overseen by the Podlasie division of Polish Border Guard Service in 2024.
