Surf legend rides monster wave
Big wave legend Geoffrey "Camel" Goulden has resigned himself to the fact he will likely be killed in a fatal shark attack while pursuing his love of surfing.
Goulden's successful ride of a monster 12m wave off the South West late last year has earned him nominations in the Biggest Paddle In and Biggest Wave categories in next week's prestigious Oakley Big Wave Awards.
Surf photographer Jamie Scott captured Goulden in action at Cow Bombie, 3km off Gracetown, in October.
It came just weeks after Goulden helped rescue a surfer who was seriously injured during a shark attack at Red Bluff, north of Carnarvon, last August.
Goulden said he had several near misses with sharks in WA and had resigned himself to the possibility he would one day be attacked.
"It's just part of my life, I just live with it," he said.
"I've had all sorts of crazy encounters with sharks and to me it just seems inevitable that I'm going to get eaten by a shark. I don't care, it's just mind over matter."
WA surf breaks feature prominently in the $35,000 awards, with every finalist in the Biggest Slab category coming from waves caught at The Right in the South West.
