Supermarket forced to ban 'disgusting' customer habit

A grocery store in the UK has gone viral after posting a sign advising customers on how to carry cash amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Due to the nation-wide corona scare we won’t be accepting any money that has currently been in people’s mouths, bras, shoes,” the sign says.

The supermarket branch Iceland.co.uk posted the handwritten note at one of their Manchester locations where it was snapped by Elliot Eastwick and uploaded to Twitter.

After posting the sign with the caption “Never change Rochdale”, the image quickly went viral with social media reacting to the specific message.

“Bras and shoes?” one person asked

“That raises more questions than answers,” another commented.

“That’s me shopping elsewhere then,” one user wrote.

Several people shared similar experiences with handling money from the public, suggesting that the staff were not overreacting.

“Disgusting! It’s not uncommon, I work in customer service and see some gross things,” one person said.

“Clammy, warm money. You soon learn not to eat crisps at work after a day our two of handling it. I speak from good old retail experience,” another person added.

Despite the joking, Iceland staff are not overreacting with the World Health Organisation (WHO) confirming COVID-19 is spread by touching objects that have been contaminated by an infected person.

“The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales,” WHO said.

“These droplets land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.”
