Priscilla Presley still feels Elvis’ presence 40 years after his death

Elvis Presley may have left the building 40 years ago, but for Priscilla Presley, his presence is everywhere.

Walking through Graceland, the home the couple shared together, Priscilla revealed some of her most precious memories to Sunday Night’s Mike Amor.

“When I walk in that front door I just feel his presence here and this being the room that we would play gospel music in, I’d sit over here on the couch,” she said.

“I had him all to myself.”

Priscilla was reflecting on Elvis' life on the 40th anniversary of the music legend's death.

The pair met after Elvis had been drafted and sent to an army base in Germany. Priscilla Beaulieu was the teenage stepdaughter of a US Air Force major.

She still remembers the first time she laid eyes on the superstar.

“I was only 14. My parents were a nervous wreck," Priscilla said.

"I told my parents that they had to let me go (with him) or they would ruin my life.”

After a seven-year courtship, Elvis and Priscilla finally walked down the aisle in 1967. Nine months later their daughter Lisa-Marie was born. They were the most famous family on Earth.

But Priscilla said that Elvis’ fame and infidelities pushed their marriage to breaking point.

“It was the lifestyle. I couldn’t keep up, it was hard keeping up and I had a daughter,” Priscilla said.

“He wasn’t faithful, not that he had someone special, but when you’re in the entertainment business there is always that and I tried to turn my back to that, but I just didn’t want to share him. Simple as that.”

Their marriage broke apart after four years but Elvis and Priscilla remained as close as ever.

“We never lost our friendship and our care for each other,” she said.

“He would call me at night. I really valued his calls. I valued him telling me what was wrong.”

When Elvis died on August 16, 1977, Priscilla decided to keep his memory alive by opening their family home, Graceland, to the public.

“It was difficult for me to share so much and open up so much because he was so private, but I know that he would have loved to have shown what he accomplished in his life,” she said.

“I don’t think ever in his wildest dreams he could have imagined being this successful, this loved, still 40 years later.”

Priscilla Presley is coming to Australia this November for a national tour where she will answer questions and share her stories about her life with Elvis.
