At home with Cher

Sunday September 22, 2013

Reporter: Rahni Sadler

Producer: Erin Reimer

For one crazy day, Sunday Night’s Rahni Sadler steps inside Cher’s Malibu mansion to talk with the pop diva about her incredible life.

At 67, Cher’s got nothing to hide: humble, unaffected and searingly honest, she swears like a sailor and happily dishes on her famous romances, her lifelong bond with Sonny Bono, and a tumultuous career that’s seen her pick up an Oscar, an Emmy, two Golden Globes and a BAFTA.

Cher’s family life has been just as eventful: as a child she was placed in an orphanage while her mother battled to make ends meet. As a mother herself, she famously struggled with her daughter Chastity coming out as a lesbian, then more recently adjusted to the news that Chaz is transgender, and is now her son.

Through it all, she’s had her knockbacks. Cher tells Sunday Night about the first private screening for her breakthrough film, 1983’s Silkwood – the rest of the cast and crew burst out laughing when she appeared on screen. Cher had the last laugh though, as the film delivered her with her first Academy Award nomination.

Showing Sunday Night around her impressive home, Cher describes her first album in 12 years as her best work to date – but the self-deprecating pop icon still admits she’s ‘not a Cher fan’.

Cher’s brand new album Closer to the Truth is released on Friday September 27 in Australia. You can pre-order it now on iTunes or at JB HiFi.
