It’s been a wild ride for Jessica Mauboy: from a tomboy teen to an international pop star and award-winning actor, all by the age of 24.

Jess started singing at age three, and childhood singing competitions led to an audition for Australian Idol at the tender age of 16 – her devoted dad Ferdy borrowed enough money to send her to the audition. Jess was reluctant, but she blew the judges away with a powerhouse rendition of Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing.

From there, it’s been a steady rise to the top, with two huge albums and a string of platinum-selling singles. Through it all, though, she’s kept her feet on the ground and stayed with longtime boyfriend, Darwin council worker Themeli Magripilis. Sunday Night guest reporter Melissa Doyle manages to corner the publicity-shy young man at a family BBQ for a chat about his famous girlfriend.

Sunday Night also discovers that Jessica’s star turn last year in The Sapphires sparked an incredible family revelation. Watching the film, one woman, a member of the stolen generation, thought she could see a family resemblance in Jess. In fact, she is the Mauboys’ long-lost aunty – we’re there as the family members are reunited for only the second time since learning they were related.

We also travel with Jess to Yipirinya School in Alice Springs. She’s the ambassador for the school, which focuses on teaching young Aboriginal kids about their own culture and improving their entire lives.

The school runs all sorts of extra programs to help encourage the kids to get to school, like providing breakfast and lunch and a school bus service (both unfunded by government), plus teaching in the kids’ local Indigenous languages.

Yipirinya desperately needs funding to continue these programs – CLICK HERE to make a donation. You can also follow the school on Facebook and Twitter.

As for Jessica, she’s got a busy few months ahead, with a new single, third studio album and an extensive national tour. The single Pop a Bottle (Fill Me Up) is released on September 27, with the album Beautiful to follow on October 4. Jessica’s To the End of the Earth tour kicks off in Perth on November 2, with tickets for all shows available through Ticketek.
