'Stupid way to die': Teen struck by ute while mucking around with friend

A teenage boy has witnessed his 17-year-old mate die on the roadside in Annerley, about 10 kilometres south of Brisbane, after a night of skylarking ended in tragedy.

At 9.50pm Wednesday night on a blind bend on Ipswich Road, the two 17-year-olds had been dicing with death.

“They appeared to be skylarking in the middle of the road, sitting on the concrete barrier between the inbound and outbound lanes of Ipswich Road,” Inspector Sean Cryer of the Queensland Police Service said.

Even at that hour, there was a steady flow of traffic.

“One of the other witnesses said they were throwing shoes at each other, one’s gone to run quickly across the road, the other one was seen ducking in and out of traffic,” Inspector Sean Cryer said.

The teen was hit by a ute, while the 52-year-old driver wasn’t seriously injured.

“When I got there I just saw someone lying on the ground and someone screamed,” witness Sam Patane said.

Despite just witnessing the horrific impact, other drivers launched into action, starting CPR within seconds, but there was no saving the teen.

“It was very traumatising because clearly you don’t know what’s going on, you hear a loud noise, you get out and you just see a lot of people,” Mr Patane said.

“This is just a stupid way to die,” Inspector Sean Cryer said of the tragic fatality.
