A man in his 30s has been indirectly struck by lightning in Adelaide's south-west as storms and brief but heavy rain hit the city.

He suffered an electric shock after the metal road plate next to him was hit by lighting on Thursday, the ambulance service said.

He was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre with non-life threatening injuries.

Earlier on Thursday, 6000 properties across Adelaide's south and west lost power as the storm hit.

That number had been cut in half by mid-afternoon, SA Power Networks said.
