'Stop being so lazy': Restaurant owner's scathing message for parents

A Sydney restaurant owner has declared a war on phones, iPads and any other distractions at the dinner table in an effort to encourage families to talk.

Attila Yilmaz, who runs Canterbury’s PAZAR Food Collective, posted on Instagram telling parents to stop being “so f***ing lazy and interact” with their children.

“It’s time for them to learn the art of dining, enjoying food, conversation and sharing,” he wrote on social media.

“If you can’t handle it, get a sitter or go to the RSL club.”

He posted it after realising a child had scribbled on one of his tables.

Not every parent was thrilled with the idea.

One suggested if children weren’t allowed to use colouring books the owner could “present an alternative”.

Behavioural expert Michael Carr-Gregg said the ban on devices has merit.

“I think it’s very important for parents to set limits and boundaries over what is, and what is not, acceptable behaviour in a restaurant,” Mr Carr-Gregg said.

However, he added the removal of colouring books “is probably a step too far”.

The restaurant doesn’t want the ban to deter families from bringing children along and is reportedly planning to let kids under the age of five eat for free, if they come to an early dinner.

PAZAR has been contacted for comment.
