'Never seen anything like it': Car filmed speeding on wrong side of major freeway

A witness has filmed terrifying footage of an allegedly stolen SUV driving at speed in the wrong lane of a major freeway.

The white four-wheel-drive was caught on camera narrowly avoiding other cars and trucks as it drove at oncoming traffic on Melbourne’s Princess Highway in Pakenham on Thursday morning.

“I’ve never seen anything like it in Melbourne. I thought he was going to have a head-on,” witness Nick Wall told 9News.

“I thought it was all-over for someone.”

The driver was then seen pulling into a service station where police caught up with him.

The 24-year-old male driver and 20-year-old female were then surrounded by police and pepper-sprayed before being arrested.

A Victoria Police spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia the white Mitsubishi had been stolen prior to the incident and as of Thursday evening the driver was still in police custody.

“It is believed the vehicle.... rammed a police vehicle before the pair were sprayed with OC spray and arrested,” the spokesperson said.

“His 20-year-old female passenger has been released pending further enquiries. The investigation remains ongoing.”
