Stolen Merc reverses into Melbourne bus

The driver of an allegedly stolen classic Mercedes trying to escape police on a main Melbourne road during peak hour has reversed into a bus before getting the car stuck on a tram reserve kerb.

Police tried to pull over the left-hand drive Mercedes 280SL on Victoria Parade at East Melbourne shortly before 6.30pm on Wednesday.

"As they (the officers) got out the car's taken off and reversed into a bus that was coming down the bus lane and then kept reversing and got stuck," Sergeant Stuart Pontil-Scala told AAP at the scene.

"It looks like it's a collector's car, pity what's happened to it."

There were two men inside the car and because only two officers were at the scene, an urgent call for back-up was made, flooding the outward-bound lanes of Victoria Parade with police and forcing traffic to a crawl during the evening peak hour.

Another three cars crashed into each other while police were still at the scene.

The two men were arrested without incident and no one was injured.
