Stephen Strasburg gets thrown out from right field while attempting to break up no-hitter
No-hit bids usually end when a batter makes contact like Stephen Strasburg did in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game between the Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers.
With Dodgers starter Hyun-jin Ryu mowing down the Nationals lineup, Strasburg stepped into the box hoping to get his team’s first hit of the day. That seemed to have happened when Strasburg poked a low line drive down the right-field line that bounced in the outfield.
And then Dodgers right-fielder Cody Bellinger did this.
The Nationals challenged the call on the field, but replay showed that Strasburg was convincingly out.
According to Baseball Savant, Strasburg’s line drive, which was officially recorded as a groundout, had an expected batting average of .860.
That’s another highlight for a season in which Bellinger is establishing himself as one of the brightest stars in the National League, and it would have been one of those classic plays that always seem to pop up in no-hitters had Ryu finished the job.
Ryu ended up taking the no-hit bid into the eighth inning, where the Nats’ recently signed outfielder Gerardo Parra followed up a game-winning grand slam Saturday with a double to the left-field wall to get his team into the hit column.

Despite missing out on history, Ryu still continued his excellent season with eight shutout innings, striking out nine and allowing just two baserunners. He now holds a 1.72 ERA and 0.73 WHIP with 54 strikeouts, and just three walks.
