Starving baby trapped in cot next to mum's dead body for days
A starving baby has been rescued after being trapped in her cot next to her mum's dead body for two days.
Neighbours hired a locksmith to break into the apartment in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, after hearing the infant crying constantly.
Inside they found hairdresser Sandra Maria de Sousa Silva dead on her bed and her eight-month-old daughter nearby.
The police believe Sandra's boyfriend killed her and fled the scene on July 22.
The baby had bruising on her body and showed signs of dehydration and malnutrition.
Sandra's body had been violently attacked and she had wounds on her face and head, apparently caused by a bladed weapon, according to reports.
The baby, who had not been fed for at least two days, was rescued and taken to a local hospital for medical care.
The police believe the bruises and marks found on the baby girl’s body were the result of her desperate attempts to get out of the crib.
The police are investigating the hairdresser’s death as femicide.
The suspect — Davi Rodrigues whose real name is believed to be Daniel Ospina Garcia — was seen by neighbours leaving the victim’s apartment on the day Sandra died, police claim.
He is still at large.
Police have released images of Garcia allegedly leaving the apartment block with a packed bag and are trying to track him down as the investigation continues.

Sandra's murder comes as a German man goes on trial for allegedly murdering his former partner and their four-year-old son to avoid paying child support.
The 25-year-old accused, who under local privacy laws had only been named Anil G, is said to have stabbed the woman and their child before hiding their bodies in a river.
Prosecutors in Cologne say the defendant set up a meeting with his ex after she demanded money to help raise their son.
