A KOTOR remake might finally be on the way.
Several parties have corroborated rumors that the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is in production under a surprise developer.
Rumors about the KOTOR remake have been swirling around for years. But this time around, the buzz came from an episode of B.O.B the Podcast with noted Star Wars leaker Bespin Bulletin (thanks, IGN). According to Bespin Bulletin, a new KOTOR is already in development by a mystery studio.
“I talked to a couple of people, and I also found out that Jason Schreier said that it’s not with EA, and we’ll ‘never guess’ who the studio is that’s making this game,” Bespin Bulletin said on the podcast.
Bespin Bulletin was referring to a tweet made by Bloomberg gaming journalist Jason Schreier. In February 2020, Schreier’s sources told him that if a KOTOR remake were to happen, it wouldn’t be from Electronic Arts.
Sorry, I just don’t like to share things unless I’m 100% sure about them, and I’m still doing some reporting on the KOTOR rumor. I’ll say this, though: if it’s really happening, it’s not at EA

So what makes this time different? Well, Schreier’s tweet from 2020 matches neatly with the recent news from Disney about the return of Lucasfilm Games. It was recently revealed that Electronic Arts no longer has an exclusive right to produce Star Wars games, a lucrative contract that EA has enjoyed since 2013. It seems that Disney has been thinking about further outsourcing game development for some time now.
Star Wars has been very, very busy lately. There are several new Star Wars games already on the way and 11 new shows. The franchise’s lore writers have been combing through the massive trove of expanded universe content to find fresh angles and stories.
And among that expanded universe content, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic stands out as a shining example of how to do it right. The game and its sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, were praised as both being faithful Star Wars stories that exemplify the best elements of the series while also being a thoughtful deconstruction of Star Wars’ biggest tropes.
If the rumors are true, then a new generation of fans can experience the two best games set an even longer time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
