Sports reporter Mel McLaughlin will be moving to the 7 News team as the new sports presenter, working out of Sydney's Martin Place five nights a week.
McLaughlin will lead the sports bulletin from Sunday alongside 7 News anchor Mark Ferguson and meteorologist David Brown.
The self-confessed, well known and well respected "sports nut" will bring passion and aplomb to the role, which comes from a lifelong love of all things sporting.
"None of my friends are surprised at what I do because they have always known me as a sports nut. The background noises of my life are cricket in summer and soccer at night,” she said.
McLaughlin believes it was her genuine love for what she does that landed her the job.
“Sports fans are the toughest critics but they know you can’t fake passion and you can’t fake knowledge,” she said.
It was a passion recognised by Seven Network director of news and public affairs Craig McPherson who said: “Mel has sport running through her blood."
"From Rugby League, Cricket, of course Soccer and everything in between, she lives and breathes it.
“Born and bred in Quakers Hill, Mel has covered many major sporting events on the world stage and her extensive local knowledge across all of Sydney’s sporting codes will add many extra layers to what is the best sports team in the business," Mr McPherson said.
McLaughlin will fill the chair of senior journalist and presenter Jim Wilson who is stepping up to lead the 7 News Sydney’s expanding sporting team.
The sports chief has been appointed 7 News Sydney’s sports director and will continue to present the sports report on Fridays and Saturdays and afternoon bulletins.
Mr McPherson said: “Jim brings unrivalled knowledge in covering all things sport. His leadership and passion will drive our sports team on a daily basis and help create other sports content.”
