Sonia Kruger's bold Gold Logie claim: 'I deserve it'

TV host Sonia Kruger has spoken out ahead of the Logie Awards, revealing the celebrities she thinks are most deserving of the accolade this year.

The Logies will take place on Sunday after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic, with the Channel Seven host herself up for the Gold Logie.

She'll be competing for the award alongside other major Aussie TV personalities, including Today host Karl Stefanovic, Home and Away's Ray Meagher, MasterChef judge Melissa Leong, Hard Quiz host Tom Gleeson, LEGO Masters host Hamish Blake, and I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! presenter Julie Morris.

Sonia has shared who she thinks should win the award, saying it's "high time" a woman took home the top prize, and told TV Tonight she was the most deserving winner.

"Look Karl, Tom, Hamish and Ray already have a Gold Logie at home so it’s high time for one of the girls to get a turn," she said.

"And it’s not a popularity contest but I did host every show on Channel Seven last year and deserve it more than everyone else. Plus, I’ve been eating salads every meal for a year. Don’t let that be for nothing."

While she believes it is a woman's turn to win the Gold Logie, she said Ray Meagher should take it home if she doesn't win.

"He's a living legend who's been in our lounge rooms as Alf in Home and Away just about every night since 1988. By my calculations, he’s clocked up around 40,000 television hours… which means he’s just eclipsed my total this year. So Ray wins," she added.

Sonia has been hosting a number of shows on Channel Seven, including Big Brother, Holey Moley, Dancing with The Stars: All Stars and The Voice.

Sonia roasted over awkward Sunrise moment

The host's Gold Logie claims come after she was roasted during a Sunrise segment where she tried to teach co-hosts David 'Kochie' Koch and Natalie Barr how to dance.

The Big Brother host asked Kochie if he wanted to have a little dance before he admitted he only knew how to do the Nutbush with his granddaughters.

Sonia then asked producers to turn up Lizzo's About Damn Time, and Kochie to amplify his hearing aids, as she attempted to teach them how to do the 'box' move.

Kochie struggled with the moves while Nat managed to keep up before Sonia began sliding and clicking.

The segment promoting Sonia as a Gold Logie nominee was brutally mocked online by viewers.

"We are really scraping the bottom of the barrel! If this is the best personality on Australian TV we need a major review," one wrote on Twitter.

"Just when you thought Sunrise couldn't get any worse they did," another said on Facebook.

"Grow up Sonia Kruger, she needs to act her age," a third added.

Australians can now vote here for the Most Popular Logie awards, with voting open until the end of the red carpet on June 19.
