Snake swells to giant size after swallowing mystery meal

A giant snake’s appetite has stunned a Queensland man after he spotted the reptile sporting a humungous bulge in its stomach.

Mitch Grady shared remarkable footage and images of his discovery on Monday after stumbling across the snake on the banks of the Wild River in Ravenshoe, 130km southwest of Cairns.

“Found this absolute beauty today, obviously well fed too!” he wrote on Facebook.

The snake can be seen edging along a thick branch overhanging the river as it looks for a quiet spot to digest its feast.

And the online community was equally in awe of the reptile after it had engulfed the mystery meal.

“That’s a good sized meal!” one user said.

“Maybe check there are no missing kids in the area,” another tongue-in-cheek comment read.

“Hopefully just ate a cat, ” another said.

After assessing images of the snake, local snake catcher David Walton told Yahoo News he believes the reptile, which he identified as a carpet python, had indulged in some of the local wildlife.

“It could have eaten large water rat, bandicoot, flying fox or maybe curlew,” Mr Walton, founder of Cairns Snake Removals, said.

He said judging by the vegetation surrounding the snake, it was about 2.5 metres in length.
