Snake catcher responds to 'cat hater' labels after python post
WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT: A snake catcher has responded to “haters” after he issued a grim warning about keeping pet cats indoors.
On Wednesday, snake catcher Luke shared two photos to his Facebook page of cats just moments after they came off second best against large pythons during outdoor “scuffles”.
The post initiated a slew of negative comments, with some agreeing that “the only good cat is a dead cat”.
Luke uploaded a video to Facebook on Thursday night to hit back at the cat criticism, explaining the post was to keep both pets and wildlife safe.
“I don’t hate cats. I have actually had a couple of indoor cats in my life and I love them, which is exactly why I feel strongly about having cats indoors where it’s safe,” he said.
“They’re not going to get hit by cars, attacked by dogs, get in fights with other cats or get diseases.
“If you really care strongly about your cat, why would you risk it by having it go roaming?”
Luke also said he was disappointed the original post turned into a “hate-fest”.
Earlier, the snake catcher told Yahoo7 News he found feathers, frog legs and a chewed bird corpse near one of the dead cats.
Luke said he only sees about 10 cats come off second best in a tussle with a snake, but cats kill about 650 million reptiles across the country annually.
“There are so many dangerous things out there – cars, dogs, other cats and the occasional wildlife that that fights back – why do people let them out?” he said.
“These cats would have killed about 50,000 reptiles in their lifetime.”
