Gas prices in Newfoundland and Labrador are up by less than a cent Thursday, marking the first time in five weeks prices have increased.

The Public Utilities Board increased the maximum price of gas by 0.6 cents per litre, putting the top cost for drivers on the Avalon Peninsula — where gas is typically cheapest — at $1.61 per litre. Some retailers charge less to compete for customers.

Other prices across the province vary by location, and range between $1.61 and $1.78 per litre in Newfoundland and between $1.64 and $2.20 per litre in Labrador.

All other fuels are down in price.

Diesel decreased by 0.7 cents per litre — except by 0.4 cents per litre in Labrador West and Churchill Falls — putting maximum prices between $1.64 and $1.76 per litre in Newfoundland and between $1.79 and $2.59 per litre in Labrador.

Furnace oil decreased by 0.54 cents per litre, meaning customers in Newfoundland will pay maximum prices between $1.01 and $1.19 per litre depending on where they're located.

The price of stove oil decreased by the same amount across much of the province, except by 0.34 cents per litre in Labrador West and Churchill Falls. The change put price maximums between $1.06 and $1.24 per litre across Newfoundland and between $1.17 and just over $1.94 per litre across Labrador.

Propane heating fuel saw the largest decrease, at three cents per litre. Maximum prices now range between 91 cents and $1.04 per litre in Newfoundland and between 77 cents and $1.22 per litre in Labrador.
