A pregnant Brazilian woman who was bludgeoned with an axe by the Gold Coast father of her unborn child told her family she was doing everything she could to keep safe in the months leading up to her murder.
Brock Wall is concurrently serving two life sentences for killing his ex-girlfriend Fabiana Palhares and their unborn baby at her Varsity Lakes home as she screamed for help down the line of a triple-zero call on February 2, 2015.
The 38-year-old was sentenced in the Brisbane Supreme Court to a 20-year non-parole period on Monday.
Ms Palhares' brother and his wife, Raphael and Mariana Nakamura Palhares, said the 34-year-old was doing everything she could to keep safe, that she had been excited about becoming a mother and regularly sent them photos of her growing belly.
"She assured us that she was in a safe country and that she was making sure that he could not hurt her," their victim impact statement read.
"It feels weird because we still have the feeling that this is all a nightmare and that everything is OK, and that Fabiana and her little baby are fine."
Wall and Ms Palhares had dated in 2013 but reconnected in October 2014.
He was physically and verbally abusive towards Ms Palhares, on one occasion screaming at her, "I hope you lose the baby, I don't even know if it's mine" and telling her to get an abortion.
Five days before he killed Ms Palhares, Wall told a co-worker on a construction site: "I am going to f***ing kill her. I might punch her in the guts first."
On February 2 he went to the Surfers Paradise Police Station where he told officers she would not be having her baby and dismissed a verbal warning not to approach her.
He then drove to her home where he bashed her, jumped on her stomach so hard the soles of his shoes were later identifiable as bruises on her skin, and fractured her face and skull with a tomahawk he found in her shed.
Ms Palhares was taken to hospital after being found by police on the floor of her bedroom with a faint pulse, but could not be saved.
