Charania presents the standoff as a a disagreement between the two sides over Simmons' mental health. Simmons' camp reportedly claims the Sixers are trying to force him to play despite his struggles with mental health, while the team apparently wants information from its mental health professionals that actually show Simmons' need for time off.
Simmons had reportedly begun meeting with a team-recommended specialist to discuss his mental health concerns. That development led to Simmons' agent Rich Paul claiming the team wants to deem the player fit to force him to play, no matter what he tells the specialist.
Sixers have repeatedly fined Ben Simmons
The Sixers are about to begin a Western Conference road trip that includes games against the Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors. Apparently, Simmons shouldn't be expected to join them for those games.
The Sixers fining Simmons or withholding his salary has been a recurring story throughout this season. It began the season by withholding 25 percent of his salary, which it has reportedly since released, and fining him for not playing while demanding a trade.
Those fines stopped when Simmons came forward with his mental health concerns, but resumed when he refused to meet with team doctors to discuss such concerns. Now, with Simmons' agent publicly undermining the Sixers' recommended specialist, the team is once again fining him for refusing to join them on the court.
