SINGAPORE — Regional TV channel CNA has apologised for showing a SEA Games medal tally table with the wrong flags of participating nations.
While CNA, a unit of the Games official broadcaster Mediacorp, did not elaborate, a viral photo has been circulating that shows nine flags of the 11 SEA Games nations were mismatched. For example, the flag of Malaysia is shown next to “Singapore”, the flag of Singapore is shown next to “Thailand”, and the flag of hosts Vietnam is shown next to “Malaysia”.
The table is accurate for the display of the flags of Myanmar and Timor Leste next to their names.
In a post on its Facebook page, CNA said it made the mistake, which aired on Asia First on its channel, at around 7:50am this morning. “The names of the countries participating in the SEA Games and their respective national flags were mismatched.”
The error was on air for about 25 seconds and later corrected for subsequent SEA Games updates during Asia First, which included an on-air apology.
CNA said, “We deeply regret this happened. It falls short of the professional standards that we expect of ourselves and we extend a sincere apology to our viewers. We will strive to do better.”
