A thrifty mum has shared an easy way Aussies can turn their trash into treasure with a simple bin hack that allows her to exchange her household rubbish for cash.

With many still grappling with the cost-of-living crisis, some might be looking for easy ways to earn extra money to get by. And the recycling scheme demonstrated by the Victorian mum might just be the answer many are looking for.

In a video on social media, the mum of two implied she was pleasantly surprised after pocketing $38.70 simply by trading in her used cans and bottles. It's part of the state's container deposit scheme which encourages recycling by offering residents 10c for every eligible container that's recycled.

Most aluminium, glass, plastic and liquid paperboard (carton) drink containers between 150mL and 3 litres are eligible. Similar schemes are in place across the country, including Queensland's 'Containers for Change' recycling scheme and NSW's Return and Earn scheme.

And while it doesn't seem like much, the mum named Stacey proves collecting your rubbish might just be worth it.

In the video posted online, Stacey revealed an entire wheelie bin filled with used cans and bottles which she'd been collecting outside her home. She's seen removing the bin liner to expose a huge bag spilling out all over the floor.

She then drives the rubbish to the dedicated collection point where the containers are sorted, counted and recycled before being handed $38.70 in cash — all without having to do very much at all.

While collecting bottles and cans to recycle is a trend among many, most who do it find themselves having to rummage through bins to find them. Andrew Hill from The Salvation Army previously told Yahoo News "it's not unusual to hear and see people" going through bins now the government has offered a financial incentive.

"If someone finds 10 bottles in a bin, that's $1... I think in times of desperation when people are really hurting financially, people will go to all measures to eat, to find the basic necessities," he said.

But some Aussies were pleasantly surprised by just how easy it is to earn a little extra from the comfort of their home or workplace, with one man claiming he's earned a hefty $5,000. "I've made over $ 5,000. There's a lot of drinkers at my work, and being the cleaner I'm in the best position," he said.

"I brought a plastic laundry hamper with lid to sit by the back door, when [it's] full, [I] empty into a large heavy-duty garden bag hidden away behind the garage. Then drag that to the [collection centre]. Repeat & recycle" another shared

"Our highest was $240. It's mainly water bottles because we can't drink the town water," a third admitted.
