Silent Witness' Nikki and Jack ready for their happy ending
Silent Witness ended on an upbeat note for Nikki and Jack after a member of the team was shot during their latest murder hunt.
What did you miss?
Silent Witness couple Nikki and Jack shared hopes of a happy ending in the latest episode of the crime thriller.
The forensic experts fell in love photographing grizzly murder scenes and are now engaged to be married soon finally getting together in the last season, following a nine-year-long 'will they, won't they?' storyline. The latest episode of the BBC crime drama which aired on Tuesday, 14 January, saw a dark and grisly murder hunt for a killer who bludgeoned their victims with a broken hammer.
The second part of the two-partner named Homecoming ended in a dramatic fight which saw Detective Constable Nick Whelan (Billy Harris) shot in the shoulder and fighting for his life. But the show came to an upbeat conclusion as Dr Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and forensic expert Jack Hodgson (David Caves) showed they are ready for their happy ending.
What, how and why?
The Silent Witness team were investigating the death of a man in his 60s had been beaten to death with a hammer. New crime analyst Kit Brooks, played by Francesca Mills, trawled back through the archives and found a past crime where a victim had suffered identical scarring to the face from a hammer with a broken claw.
This led them to interview a former prison guard who had been a foster carer with his wife. When DC Whelan went to interview him about the hammer attack he had previously been the victim of, the past unravelled and Whelan ended up being held at gunpoint.
In his bid to call the police he was shot in the shoulder. He managed to kick the gun out of the assailants hand, but then as they tussled on the floor trying to reach it, the attacked pushed his thumb into the gunshot wound.
The identity of the hammer killer and the reasons for the prison guard's own assault were eventually revealed and the case came to a close. Whelan was shown with his arm in a sling, chatting to Nikki and Jack back at their office, along with Detective Superintendent Jane De Freitas (returning guest star Zoe Telford).
As they walked to the lifts DS De Freitas told them: "He's alright aren't you Whelan?"
She went on: "Oh by the way, our mystery woman emigrated to Oz back in 99, despite her criminal record. She flourished apparently – mother of three, runs her own catering business." Nikki commented: "Good for her."
De Freitas replied: "Just thought, you know – happy endings – still happen, huh?" And shot them a meaningful look. Nikki and Jacks smiled longingly into one another's eyes and held hands as they walked away.
This follows an awkward moment between the couple last week when they started talking about whether they both wanted to have children.
Excited fans spotted that after Nikki led Jack back inside by the hand, the camera cut to a shot of a couple walking along a street pushing a pram.
One wrote on social media platform X: "The way Jakki looked at each other at the end and then the cut to a couple with a pram …… are we actually going to get Jack & Nikki being parents?"

Another said: "What is it with Jane talking about happy endings whilst looking at Nikki and Jack and the next shot is A COUPLE WITH A STROLLER???!?!!??? DO YOU WANT ME TO GO INSANE".
But someone else tweeted: "I hope the 'happy endings' line at the end was in reference to the next shot of the woman with the pushchair but my pessimism makes me worry it means they’re both going to leave".
What else happened on Silent Witness?
Fox recently hinted that Nikki and Jack's wedding plans may not be straight forward.
Appearing on The One Show this week she said: "Well, yes it’s been bubbling along for a long time hasn’t it? Their friendship and then their getting together and seeing whether they can work together and love each other. We wanted to portray a healthy relationship on the screen and then now there is that commitment that’s been made."
She went on: "And with this series we see Jack trying to plan the perfect wedding, and Nikki sort of paralysed by how much there is to put in for arranging a marriage, so she doesn’t even know where to begin… We’ll see what happens!
Silent Witness returns at 9pm on BBC One on Monday, 20 January.
