'Wealthy' neighbour savaged over 'sad' noise complaint

Children have been ordered to keep quiet while they play at a public Sydney park, after a resident made a noise complaint to the council.

On a recent trip to the Manly Lagoon Reserve Playground with his little boy and dog, an outraged dad spotted a sign warning visitors to keep it down.

The sign, erected by the Northern Beaches Council stated: “While playing here, please be mindful of excessive noise which is disruptive to residents living nearby.”

Martijn Timmer took a picture and shared it on Facebook on Wednesday with the caption: “Australia today. What sad people we share the land with.”

It is believed the person behind the complaint was a “wealthy” man who owns a mansion overlooking the off-leash dog park.

In an interview with A Current Affair, Mr Timmer asked: “Is this excessive?”

“This is a nanny state gone crazy,” he added.

Following backlash from other residents of the affluent beachside suburb, the sign has since been removed to protect the man who complained from being “targeted”.

In a statement to the ABC, the council said it removed signs at the park “as a duty of care” to the resident who made the noise complaint.

The council said it would work with the community to find a balance on the matter.
