This woman's side-hustle made $112,000 in 18 months

Three years ago, Queenslanders Lauren and Greg Pullock purchased their first caravan to go on an epic 10-month journey around Australia with their two children.

"When we finished that [trip], we weren't quite sure whether to keep the van or sell it," Lauren told Yahoo Finance.

"How often would we use it?"

They decided to keep the vehicle for one year to see what they could do. It was during that time they found the sharing platform Camplify, which is a market for renting out campervans.

"We might as well see if it rents out – if it rents out twice a year, that'll be good."

Lauren has revealed her family has since earned $112,000.

Their original campervan was booked within two days of listing, and the demand ramped up so much that the Pullocks soon found themselves rejecting reservation enquiries.

“We were turning away so many people, if we had more vans we could kind of make this into something,” she said.

That was only 13 months ago. The family now owns nine campervans for rent under the business name Outback 2 Sea.

"We got another one two weeks ago," Lauren said.

"We work on [the business] five days a week now… I could never have imagined a year ago that this is where I'd be now."

And purchasing more vans – and even hiring staff – is still on the agenda.

"I'm not sure at what point we would say 'That's enough vans for us now'," said Lauren.

"My main priority is to provide good service and a good experience… If we did expand more, we probably would need to hire someone part time for some extra help."

Camplify founder Justin Hales said previously that the typical campervan owner would only use their vehicle for four to six weeks a year, so it makes sense to put them to use during other times.

While the Pullocks are one of the higher earners on Camplify, the average motorhome owner on the platform still earns about $10,000 to $20,000 each year.

Lauren Pullock enjoys the flexible hours that come with working in the sharing economy.

"Working with young kids, especially… I can take my work with me. Like if my daughter's going dancing, I can take some work and work while she's in a dance class. You can schedule things around while life's happening."

The Pullocks' success is reminiscent of the Atkin family in Victoria, who Yahoo Finance reported last year earned $180,000 and now owns a fleet of 12 motorhomes.

Fred Atkin said renting out vehicles on Camplify involved less paperwork than listing a house on Airbnb, as they don't attract the same amount of scrutiny form the local council or neighbours.

Ensuring safety is the main priority for Camplify 'landlords'.

"People are towing these vehicles and you have to maintain them. You have to make sure they're safe and roadworthy."

Pullock told Yahoo Finance that you need not be a motorhome expert to get started on Camplify.

"If you have the right attitude, and you're happy to learn whatever you can, then you can."
