Shoppers set to storm Aldi's snowballing ski gear sale

Another buying frenzy is expected at Aldi when its 2018 snow gear sale goes ahead offering jackets for under $60 and gloves for $15.

In previous years, there have been chaotic scenes in stores across the country during the ‘special buys’ sale, with shoppers pushing and shoving their way through the aisles.

Aldi offers men’s and women’s ski jackets for $59.99, which are waterproof to 12,000mm and breathable to 10,000g/m2/24hr.

Rival jackets tend to be priced significantly higher. The O’Neill Exile Ski Jacket, for example, retails for $277 at online retailer ASOS.

According to Snow Riders Australia, waterproofing of around 10,000mm is ideal for those who lightly ski for a few hours a day in good conditions and “rarely break a sweat”.

But it discourages the more professional skiiers who take to the slopes in any weather from purchasing this level and instead suggests jackets with a 20,000mm.

Aldi offers higher level waterproofing with their Inoc Premium Ski Shell Jacket that sells for $119.

When it comes to gloves Aldi sells its Premium Leather Ski Gloves for $34.99 and snowboard gloves for $14.99.

Shoppers can also buy kids ski gloves for $9.99.

ASOS sells Oakley’s range of ski gloves waterproof to 10,000mm for $89.

But for shoppers who decide the sale is too good to miss, they will have to brave the queues at their local store.

Last year, there were chaotic scenes in stores across the country with crowds streaming in.

“The queue slowly fed into the store and then it was on. People were leaning over others and I was happy and smiling and was met with a few stern faces,” mother Claire Haiek said.

The sale kicks off on May 19.
