Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment a bus carrying German tourists careened off a road and plunged down a hill on the Portuguese island of Madeira.
The grainy video, which was broadcast by local media, shows the bus leaving the road and flipping off its wheels before it continues to hurtle down the steep hill.
The crash, which killed at least 29 people and injured another 28, occurred on Wednesday night local time on the island off the coast of northwest Africa.
The island is a popular holiday destination for mainland Europeans. Most of those killed were German nationals aged between 50 and 70.
Portuguese authorities have announced there will be an official inquiry into the fatal incident, with mechanical failure being investigated as a possible cause.
Regional authorities declared three days of mourning for the victims, starting from Thursday.
The mayor of Canico, the coastal town near where the crash occurred, told reporters: “I have no words to describe what happened.
“I cannot face the suffering of these people.”
